¡@Fungi

Taiwan is rich in fungus species, with over 300 species of Agaricales (mushrooms and toadstools) alone. In terms of distribution, they include species which are found world- wide, boreal species, tropical and subtropical species, temperate and montane species and Taiwan endemic species. Furthermore, due to Taiwan's special geographical location in the evolutionary transition zone between southern and northern hemisphere fungi, the island has many special fungus varieties, such as the Taiwan variety of matsutake. Due to the richness and diversity of large fungus species in Taiwan, for the initial period TESRI has chosen mainly to collect specimens from areas at various different altitudes. In this way we hope to gain an understanding of Taiwan's macrofungus flora, make comparisoms with overseas species, exchange specimens with overseas researchers, and systematically collect and survey fungus species which form a part of Taiwan's unique vegetation or which grow in the different types of forest found in the island's different climatic zones.
