Ecosystems
Taiwan's grasslands are largely to be found in inaccessible areas
such as the Hsuehshan Mountain Range and the Central Mountain Range.
They were mainly created by fires started by human activity or naturally,
and can be divided into three types: Yushan cane grassland, Alpine
silver grass grassland, and a mixture of the two. The most widespread
and typical is Yushan cane grassland. There is also a small amount
of grassland in coastal areas, largely associated with stock grazing.
The alpine grasslands cover vast tracts of land, but because they
are mainly located in remote, inaccessible places, we have no detailed
data on their animal and plant life, TESRI is currently embarking
on a survey of the organisms within these ecosystems in the hope
of gaining a better understanding of grassland ecology, as a basis
for later management and conservation.
