¡@Studies on Population Dynamic of Taiwan Red Cypress ( Chamaecyparis fromosensis ) in Jui-Yen Nature Reserve

Abstract:

For understanding the seed dispersal model of Taiwan red cypress in Jui-Yen Nature Resreve, in 1996 July, we set two groups of seed trap to collect dispersal seed. One group was set along road side and the other group was set under old mature Taiwan red cypress forest, each of them consist of 25 traps. Every one or one and half month we collected and counted the number of seed of Taiwan red cypress. According to the result, we found that the seed dispersal occurred all year but the peak season was in January to March. The amount of seed in peak season was 79% of total. The total amount of seed being collected from old mature Taiwan red cypress was more than that from road side. The estimate was 15 million and 0.19 million seeds/ha. Respectively. The germination ability of these seeds was very poor only being 0.8125%. Although lower amount of seed dispersed in road side but most seedling of Taiwan red cypress was found on such environment. By contrast, seldom seedling was found under old mature Taiwan red cypress forest.
