¡@Long-Term Research of Woody Plants In Permanent Plot of Wushyrkeng Area

Abstract:

The purpose of this serious study was to construct 3 permanent plots in Wushyrkeng Area for long-term research and monitoring. In this section, our responsibility was to survey the woody plant composition in the first permanent plot. The first permanent plot was set on a quite flat small ridge. The area of this permanent plot is 1 ha. Which consists of 25 subplots, each being 400m^2. We surveyed all woody plants with dbh >= 1cm in each subplot, and tagged trees with dbh >= 5cm. As the result, we recorded 54 species and 1011 stems that belong to 29 families. Such low densities are due to some of subplots being located under canopy gaps thus having luxuriant grass growth which inhibited the regeneration of woody plants. According to the canopy dominant and subcanopy dominant we can describe this forest as Machilus zuihoensis-Turpinia formosana type. The most dominant families in this plot wewe Lauraceae and Fagaceae and major compositions were Machilus zuihoensis, Cryptocarya chinensis, Machilus Kusanoi, Phobe formosana, Trupinia formosana, Castanipsis hystrix etc. All these species are the typical composition of Maxhilus-Castanipsis Zone in Central Taiwan. Most subplots had similar dominant composition but slightly different company species. Some of these company species were pioneer trees such as Trema orientalis, Mallotus paniculantus, Melisoma rhiifolia, Clerodendrum trichotomum. Basically this plot should be the same forest type, however some subplots were in early development.
