¡@Forest Ecosystems

Forested areas in Taiwan cover something over 1.86 million hectares, or 52% of the island's total area. They can be broadly divided into six type:subalpine forest, cooltemperate montane forest, warm-temperate montane forest,warm-temperate montane rainforest, tropical rainforest and strand forest.
Currently, the greatest threats of Taiwan's forest are forest fires, overexploitation, and destruction by various kinds of development. Failure to halt such activities has led to the gradual depletion of many virgin forests of special ecological signficance, thus jeopardizing the existence of many wild animals and plants. As well as surveying the ecologies of the vegetation around it expermental stations at different altitudes, TESRI will also investigate population trends among important coniferous forest trees such as the Taiwan fir and Taiwan spruce, to help us maintain the complete ecosystem.
