Taiwan has many different ecosystems. On land, it has tropical strand forests, evergreen borad-leaved forests, mixed coniferous and borad-leaved forests, coniferous forests, grassland and so on, and on water it has rivers, marshes, lakes, estuaries, sea coasts, coral reefs, etc.. Due to its complex topography and environment, the island is extremely rich in animal and plant life.
Natural resources are extremely fragile. Once damaged, it is extremely difficult for them to recover, and the harm may be permanent. Damage to ecosystems often brings changes to the whole flora and fauna, causing species to go extinct or reducing their numbers, and this many lead to irreparable economic and scientific losses. It is always said that protecting habitats is even more improtant than protecting individual rare species.
