Experimental Stations

To serve the overall needs of conservation research, in accordance with different ecological and environmental needs, the Institute is setting up experimental stations at low, medium and high altitudes to provide centers for expermental field research activities such as restoring and breeding wild animals, propagating and cultivating wild plants, and preserving genotype material. The stations allow scientists to get close to species' natural environment to research and conserve species which urgently require concentrated study and observation.

Low Altitude Experiment Station

The Low Altitude Experimental Station was set up on 20 September 1993 and is located at Wushihkang near Tzuyou Village in Taichung County's Hoping Rural Township. Its experimental area covers 382.4 hectares of National Forest. The area's elevation ranges from 670 to 1,834 meters, its annual average temperature is 18° C and its average annual rainfall is 2,600mm. It is surrounded by an area of unspoiled natural environment and it an excellent site for ecological research.

Medium Altitude Experimental Station

The Medium Altitude Experimental Station is located near Tengchih at Baoshan Village in Taoyuan Rural Township, Kaohsiung County. Its experimental area covers 219.06 hectares of National Forest. The elevation ranges from 1,100 to 2,651 meters, the annual average temperature is approximately 15° C, and annual average rainfall is approximately 2,200mm. Most of the area is covered by natural forest and is rich in wild animals and plants.

High Altitude Experimental Station

The High Altitude Experimental Station will be established near North Hehuan Mountain, where the borders of Nantou County's Jenai Rural Township and Hualien County's Hsiulin Rural Township meet. Its experimental area will cover some 260 hectares of National Forest. The area's altitude ranges from 2,900 to 3,422 meters, its annual average temperature is 7.7 ° C and its annual average rainfall 3,500mm. Its vegetation consists largely of Taiwan fir, Taiwan hemlock and Yushan cane, and it contains typical alpine forest and alpine grassland ecosystems.
