"Nature" is a book without words which can be read by anyone with the desire to do so, and which can bring new insights and benefits to all. Yet in their pursuit of material gratification, people often overlook the existence of nature, and in particular have only a limited knowledge of the natural resources all around them in Taiwan. They also lack conservation consciousness, and this makes it difficult for conservation work to succeed. Therefore as well as conducting research, TERSI also provides education on our local ecology, to help the public understand nature and thus to love and value it.

"Education Center"
The Education Center will be the main means by which the Institute seeks to promote conservation consciousness. The building is due to be completed in 1998, and its facilities will include exhibitions on Taiwan's ecology and our endemic animal and plant species, ecology films, multimedia programs, a discovery playroom, a library and reading room, ecology classrooms and a students' dormitory, to provide a long-term center for ecological study and research activities.

"Natural Resources Interpretation Database"
Providing effective education on Taiwan's local ecology is the most important aspect of our work at the present stage. Therefore there is an urgent need to set up an ecology teaching database on Taiwan's local biological and ecological resources, to provide a source of reference for people from all walks of life, and to promote education about our local ecology.

"Interpretive and Educational Materials"
"Action should be based on knowledge"; helping the public to understand the value of Taiwan's natural resource will assist the progress of conservation work. Therefore we hope to compile and publish a diverse range of explanatory materials, make ecology films, produce multimedia materials, record audio tapes and so on, to broaden the effectiveness of ecology education.

"Educational and Publicity Activities"
To promote education on Taiwan's local natural resources, from time to time we put on various training, study and publicity activities aimed at different groups including grass-roots conservation workers, teachers, students, schoolchildren and the general public. We also take every opportunity to jointly organize or take part in all kinds of nature conservation activities. At present the educational services we provide include guided tours, courses in nature conservation, and answering enquiries on ecology and conservation.
